ALUMNUS MATTHEW KROG FINDS NEW APPLICATIONS FOR SKILLS LEARNED AT CAL MARITIME
As with many Cal Maritime graduates, Matthew Krog’s journey has taken a few unexpected, albeit positive, turns. After graduating from Cal Maritime in 1981, Krog went from a 10-year career as a merchant marine where he held every position from deck hand to navigator, to his position now of vice president of Lamin-Art, a U.S.-based, privately held company that has supplied the commercial A+D industry with innovative laminates for more than 50 years.
The insight into other countries—as well as the communication and leadership skills—he gained through Cal Maritime and the maritime industry have proven invaluable in his career today.

Meet Brooke Phillips: Our Senior Architectural Representative for Lamin-Art in the southwestern markets of Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico—and a mosaic artist.
As a Senior Architectural Representative for Lamin-Art, Brooke has been part of the Lamin-Art family for more than eight years. She works with interior designers and architects as a valued resource in their specification process for diverse surface applications. And with an interior degree, it’s no surprise that she has the creative eye for design to match.
She found the discontinued designs from various collections similar to beautiful fish scales and designed a vivid mosaic of a bass fish. After that, Brooke was hooked on a new creative outlet that has developed into a treasured hobby that she shares with her young daughter. We sat down with Brooke to learn more about how creating these extraordinary fish out of our products first started.More
Project Runway met Interior Design September 26 at the 4th-annual International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Georgia’s Dressed competition, proving that couture fashion collections aren’t the only stylings deserving of a catwalk.
Pairing Atlanta’s most talented interior designers with leading contract material manufacturers, the event challenged 20 design teams to create a runway-ready, fashionable garment made almost entirely of high design, interiors finish materials, including decorative laminates, wall coverings, floor and wall tile, carpet, vinyl, rubber base, contract furniture, paint and more.
Established to promote the creativity of the interior design community, the Dressed event has become the IIDA Georgia Chapter’s largest annual happening, drawing over 500 attendees. Appropriately, the event is an important fundraiser benefiting Dress for Success, a non-profit organization that provides clothing and career advice to low-income women in over 75 cities worldwide.
This year’s theme, Dressed in Seasons: thru World-Changing Events, gave the design teams a meaningful and exciting design challenge.
“The theme created a whole new layer of understanding by reminding us how we are all connected by history, as well as design,” says Tiffany Chen, one of the team members of ASD, the multi-disciplinary design firm with offices in Atlanta, San Francisco, Washington D.C., Tampa, Jacksonville, Birmingham and South Florida.
ASD paired with event sponsor Lamin-Art, a North American design leader in architectural surfaces, including decorative laminate, real wood veneers and metal collections, along with other sponsors to create a striking World War II fighter plane-themed couture gown and structured bomber jacket combination that went on to win the Best in Spring award.
Other Seasonal winners included idea|span (Best in Winter), WB Interiors (Best in Summer), Perkins + Will (Best in Fall) and Harris + Smith (Best in Show). Winners were selected by a panel of five distinguished designers based on criteria, including creativity, craftsmanship, detailing within the garment, use of materials and wearability.
Tara Harris, Georgia architectural representative for Lamin-Art and IIDA Georgia’s industry representative, said the show was a huge success. “The idea for the competition’s theme started last summer,” she says. “Having witnessed the evolution of each team’s design concepts from gorgeous sketches to vogue creations, it was great to see their creative ideas emerge as fashions being worn on the runway.”

Earlier this month we had the pleasure of sponsoring The Common Thread for the Cure Foundation’s first Chicago Wine & Design event. Nearly 200 guests from the A+D community gathered to support the cure for breast cancer, enjoying hors d’oeuvres, gourmet cheeses and wine from Russian River Vineyards that featured last year’s winning wine labels.
Founded in 2000, The Common Thread for a Cure is challenges design firms in the A+D industry to create a wine label that supports breast cancer awareness while reflecting the Russian River brand. The labels then compete to be placed on one of two award-winning wines from Russian River Vineyards. This year: pinot noir and sauvignon blanc.
While guests mingled and admired the 12-15 label designs provided by local design firms, Carl Magnusson of CGM Design and Arexit was scrutinizing the designs and selecting this year’s winning labels.
This year Nelson designed the winning label for the Sauvignon Blanc, while Perkins and Rome won the best label for the Pinot Noir.
Each bottle of wine sporting the winning label supports Helping Hand Grants, which help support breast cancer survivors and their families. Last year, The Common Thread for the Cure assisted 25 breast cancer survivors and their families with Helping Hand Grants.
Lamin-Art’s own Georgy Olivieri is on the board of directors for The Common Thread for the Cure. We’re so glad we had the opportunity to co-sponsor this amazing event. Here’s to making this an annual gathering!

Founded in 2000 by Suzann Burkhead-Bray and Scott Burkhead, The Common Thread for a Cure is a unique program within the A+D industry that challenges designers to create a unique wine label, which they enter into a contest. The winning label is placed on the award winning wines of Russian River Vineyards and then sold through online and at industry functions throughout the US.
